Now’s the time to restore balance in our lives and take stock of the things and people we find most valuable. It’s no coincidence that Libra season is at the beginning of fall, either. While Virgo season was about buckling down, being productive, and getting sh*t done, the sun entering Libra symbolizes a more laid-back, lighter shift in your day-to-day routine and mood.

As the temperatures get cooler, you’ll be more inclined to curl up on the couch with a PSL and a loved one by your side. You'll also prioritize time spent with friends and family (safely, of course). If you’re single, you may be inclined to start swiping on some dating apps during this time, as Libra is the most romantic sign of the zodiac. Plus, Libra season is synonymous with “cuffing” season.

Whether or not Libra is your zodiac sign, this season is all about restoring balance and harmony to our stressful lives. Take this time to do some much-needed introspection and ask yourself a few questions: What do you want romantically? How can you help do your part to propel social justice forward? Who and what is most important to you right now and for the rest of the year?

Birthdates: September 22nd-October 22nd

Symbol: Balance scales

Ruling planet: Venus

Element: Air

Quality: Cardinal

Season: Fall

Your defining traits:

Ruled by Venus—the planet named after the goddess of love, beauty, and money—Libra thrives on creating a life filled with harmony. Stardust says that you are "kind, loving, relationship-oriented, balanced, and artistic." You have a keen eye for the finer things in life, namely art, and you love to surround yourself with stunning objects that complete your aesthetically pleasing environment. No object or piece of art can make you as happy as your close relationships do, though. As the most romantic sign of the zodiac, you're known to be peacemakers and conflict-solvers, and you feel the most content when you're surrounded by friends and loved ones. If you are a Libra, you're likely that one friend in the group who is constantly organizing everyone to get together, and you place a high value on people you can count on to be there when you set plans.

Who you're compatible with:

According to Stardust, "You typically like to hang out with the other air signs (i.e. Gemini and Aquarius) because it's easier for you to converse on an intellectual level." However, she also says you may be drawn to Taurus because "they are ruled by Venus, too, and have the same tastes in food and romantic sentiments." Additionally, Stardust says that Libra may be compatible with two other cardinal signs (i.e. Aries and Cancer) because "you like to inspire each other."

Your ideal career path:

"As lovers of art, you will be drawn to a creative career path or something that will require you to critique or edit others' work," says Stardust. Anything that fulfills your desires for creativity and adventure will be a good fit and utilize your keen eye for aesthetics. As a master of balance, you will also excel in career paths that allow you to tap into your proclivity for order and justice, such as a lawyer or judge.

Your ultimate purpose in life:

Libra's greatest gift is the ability to receive love and to give love, and this is what Stardust says is your ultimate purpose in life. She also says that your need for fairness in life will propel you to help people find balance, justice, and harmony in their lives. "You are optimists who believe in fairness," Stardust says. "In a Libra's world, everyone is innocent until they are heard and seen."
Gaylehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16706619535026184775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4470199949426953561.post-46078379451919524962020-07-09T04:05:00.001-05:002020-07-09T04:05:24.095-05:00HOW MANY LICKS DOES IT TAKE TO GET TO THE CENTER OF A TOOTSIE POP?

One of the most popular candy commercials of all time asks: How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop? There have been several experiments trying to nail down this sweet mystery. A group of engineering students at Purdue University made a licking machine that measured it took 364 licks, however, student volunteers only took 252. Meanwhile, students at the University of Michigan measured 411 licks on their licking machine. So the jury is still out on this question.

It's a relationship that you probably just think of as the natural order of things, established in everything from books to cartoons: Dogs chase cats, and cats and dogs hate each other. It's somewhat of a given of the animal kingdom...or is it? After all, there are plenty of multi-pet households that have a dog and a cat that get along, not to mention all of these adorable photos of dogs and cats being best friends. So what's the story here? Why do dogs chase cats? Is it because of dogs' natural instincts, and, if so, how can you prevent it?

Sure enough, it's instincts, says Dr. Jesus Aramendi, Senior Veterinarian at Chewy. "Some dogs may have the tendency to chase cats as part of an instinctual behavior." Many dogs have innate hunting instincts born out of their wolf ancestry, and unfortunately, that manifests in dogs chasing things that are small and speedy. Dr. Aramendi says that this can manifest much more strongly in certain dogs than in others. "If you have a herding or hunting breed such as Shepherds, Cattle Dogs, Retrievers, or Pointers, they may be especially inclined to chase after cats," he says.

But this instinctual behavior doesn't mean that dogs inherently dislike cats. In fact, though the dog/cat relationship might get the most press time, as it were, it's not like they specifically have it out for cats. Small critters like squirrels and rabbits can trigger dogs' chasing instincts as well—and so can inanimate things like balls and sticks. Find out some more "facts" about dogs that are totally false.

How can you stop your dog from chasing cats?

Countering instinctual behavior is no small feat, but it can be done—and nor does it really mean that your dog is "bad." "Your dog may have very little control over the rush it feels when chasing a cat or an animal," Dr. Aramendi explains. But that doesn't mean that you should throw up your hands and let it persist.

If your dog chases cats, or squirrels, or rabbits, frequently, and it's becoming a problem, you should consider seeing an animal behavioral specialist. It's a problem that might be difficult to tackle on your own. Of course, you should be trying to redirect your dog's love of the chase with toys that she can run after instead of living things. But if you're noticing that the problem persists, consider outside help. "Chasing cats and other animals may be a feeling that your dog cannot easily overcome, and further assistance and training will be needed to help your pet cope with this," Dr. Aramendi says. These are the six dogs that are easiest—and six that are hardest to train.

What if you have both a dog and a cat?

So you took the plunge and got both adorable four-legged critters...and they don't seem to like each other. Now what? Well, Dr. Aramendi has some advice. His most pressing piece of advice? Confront the problem sooner rather than later. "I highly recommend not waiting to take action," he says. "If you have both a dog and cat and your dog antagonizes your cat, this could potentially result in a dangerous fight where one pet or both could end up injured."

He says to make sure to keep a close eye on your pets and, if you start to see signs of conflict, keep them separated as best you can. And, yes, training can help. "One training tactic can be rewarding your dog with a treat when they are obeying your command to 'stay' or 'sit' in the presence of your cat," Dr. Aramendi says. And if these methods don't work, consider getting help from an animal behavioral specialist.

What if you want both a dog and a cat?

If you're thinking about getting both a dog and a cat, or have one and want the other, don't let dogs' chasing instincts stop you; just make sure you're doing it right. Breed can make a significant difference in how your pets treat each other. For instance, these are 12 cat breeds that get along with dogs. Dr. Aramendi even recommends talking to, again, an animal behavioral specialist for "information about specific breeds’ behaviors and characteristics."

Also, just like with people, first impressions can be incredibly powerful. When you're introducing your new pets to one another, don't just throw them into the deep end. "Do a few trials before you introduce them definitively," Dr. Aramendi says. Our guide to pet combinations that do and don't work together has some great advice on how to do this. And your pets will do some of the work themselves, too. "Ultimately the cat will let the dog know what their boundaries are and what lines cannot be crossed.

I’ve never met a pickle I didn’t like. But there’s a lot more to sink your teeth into than just cucumbers, you can pickle anything from onions to carrots to Brussels sprouts. Ready to try it out at home? Here’s how to pickle vegetables.

What Are Quick-Pickled Vegetables?

The most mouth-puckering homemade pickles are left to marinate in brine for a few days to maximize their flavor. But you can still pickle and eat certain veggies in the same hour if you don’t have a lot of marinating time, depending on their size and how they’re cut. Enter quick-pickled veggies. For instance, whole cucumbers need at least 48 hours to turn acidic, but sliced onions can soak up homemade brine in just 15 minutes if that’s all the time you have. The longer the veggies can soak, the more pickled they’ll be but don’t sweat it if you need them pronto.

The Benefits of Eating Pickled Vegetables

Essentially all fermented vegetables can help improve gut health, but only if they’re made with a saltwater brine. Vinegar, used for quick-pickling, kills most of the healthy bacteria that’s beneficial to gut health. While they won’t be a cure-all for all your wellness woes, there are still lots of reasons to DIY instead of buying pickles at the supermarket. Processed pickles not only contain vinegar and possible preservatives, but they can also have higher sodium than homemade pickles. Fresh pickles boast probiotics and less bloat-inducing salt. Denny Waxman, a macrobiotic counselor, says naturally-pickled and fermented foods can suppress inflammatory responses to allergies, heart disease and cancer, plus help develop a healthy, efficient immune response.
Pickled cucumbers specifically are touted as potential stress and anxiety reducers and a potential cure for period cramps, much like other probiotic-rich fermented foods like yogurt and kimchi. They’re also hydrating, vitamin-rich (they’re cucumbers, after all) and research from the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition shows they can help regulate blood sugar spikes too.

What Veggies Can I Pickle?

A few hours (or better yet, a couple days) in homemade brine transforms fresh veggies into acidic, salty deliciousness. Here are a few to get you started:

Cucumbers: Kirby cucumbers are our go-to for pickling, but Gherkins or any short cucumber that will fit in a jar work fine, if you’re pickling them whole. Stay away from long English cucumbers. Slicing cucumbers are grown for fresh consumption instead of canning and can result in pickles that are too soft instead of sturdy and crunchy. You may even see specially-labeled pickling cucumbers at the grocery store. Pickle them whole or slice them into chips or spears.

Onions: Red and pearl onions are both popular choices. Red onions go from mild and sweet to refreshing, tangy and crisp (and neon pink) when pickled. Pearl onions are soft and sweet raw but turn mellow and umami-rich post-pickling. Cut them into thin strips or rings so they’re easy to fish out of the jar later.

Radishes: Another hot-pink topper that makes any dish look better. Slice them into thin coins before pickling or pack them into the jar whole if they’re small enough.

Carrots: Julienne or thin-slice them. You can also use a peeler to create thin shreds. Pickle the carrots with daikon and you’ve got banh mi veggies ready for action.

Jalapeños: Instead of tasting straight-up hot like fresh jalapeño peppers, pickled jalapeños are equal parts sour and spicy. Cut them into rounds or halves or pickle them whole, depending on how you’re going to use or eat them. Banana peppers are also a must for heat lovers.

Brussels sprouts: Chop off the stem ends, prune any brown leaves and halve the sprouts before pickling. You can also shred them instead.

Beets: Slice them into quarters or rounds or leave them whole (as long as they’re small enough to pack into the jar).

Cabbage: Let these leafy shreds ferment in seasoned brine for three to ten days and bam: You’ve got sauerkraut.

How Do I Make Pickling Brine?

In general, pickling brine should be around two parts vinegar and one part water. You’re free to adjust to your taste, but don’t skimp *too* much on the vinegar and salt, since they’re what preserve and pickle the vegetables in the first place.
You can use any pale vinegar from white wine to rice to apple cider. Just know that the type will affect the intensity of the brine. For instance, white vinegar will be harsh and strong, so you may need to add more water. But if you’re a sucker for the pucker, you may not need to adjust (or include any water) at all. It comes down to personal preference and the ingredients you have on hand.
Speaking of personal preference, there are a ton of herbs, spices and additional ingredients that you can play with to customize homemade pickled vegetables. Here are a few popular choices that you might have in your kitchen right now:

Garlic

Black peppercorns

Dill

Whole coriander

Caraway seed

Mustard seed

Cloves

Bay leaf

Lemon juice

Crushed red-pepper flakes

Turmeric

Ginger

Sriracha

There are various sweeteners to use in place of sugar too, like honey or maple syrup.

How to Make Quick Pickles

This recipe fits a heat-safe quart jar or two pint jars. We used Kirby cukes, but feel free to try the same brine on whatever veggies you have. Once you take your first cold, crunchy bite, you’ll never go back to store-bought pickles again.
Ingredients

12 Kirby cucumbers

3 garlic cloves, minced

2 tablespoons mustard seeds

1 sprig fresh dill

2 cups apple cider vinegar

1¼ cups water

1 tablespoon salt

2 tablespoons sugar

Directions

Tightly pack the cucumbers into a heat-safe jar. If you’re quick-pickling, slice them into coins or spears first so they can soak up as much brine as possible. Add the garlic, mustard seeds and dill.

In a small pot, bring the vinegar, water, salt and sugar to a boil over medium-high heat. If you’re really pressed for time, briefly boil the cucumbers in the brine.

Pour the brine over the cucumbers and seal the jar. Let them marinate for as long as you can. If you do have time, refrigerate the jar for at least two days and up to two weeks before opening for best results.

Orange juice is the most popular fruit juice sold in the US and has been advertised as a staple in a healthy diet. Some experts warn, however, that orange juice doesn't live up to marketers' claims and may actually be bad for your health. Here's what you need to know about whether or not orange juice is a healthy addition to your diet.

<span style="font-family: "tahoma"; font-size: large;">The nutritional contents of orange juice

Orange juice has many important vitamins and nutrients but also contains high levels of sugar that may work against your health. Here is what you get in an 8-ounce glass of orange juice:

Calories: 110

Protein: 2 grams

Carbohydrates: 26 grams

Sugars: 22 grams

Vitamin C: 120% of your recommended daily intake (RDI)

Thiamin: 15% RDI

Potassium: 13% RDI

Folate: 10% RDI

A cup of orange juice carries a lot more sugar than a medium-sized orange, which contains only 62 calories and 12 grams of sugar.
Because it is more condensed, orange juice has slightly higher levels of thiamin and potassium, but oranges provide just as much vitamin C and folate, likely because these vitamins can be damaged during the juice production process.

<span style="font-family: "tahoma"; font-size: large;">The health benefits of orange juice

Orange juice contains important nutrients that our bodies need to stay healthy. Some of the main health benefits of orange juice come from:

Carotenoids: These are the pigments that create the red, orange, and yellow colors in fruits and vegetables. Carotenoids act as antioxidants in your body, boosting your immune system and fighting off harmful substances called free radicals that can cause inflammation and cancer.

Flavonoids: These are nutrients produced by plants and are well known for their health benefits. Orange juice is particularly rich in one type of flavonoid, hesperidin, which has been shown to fight free radicals and reduce inflammation.

Vitamin C: This is an essential nutrient that plays many roles in your body, including digesting proteins and helping heal wounds. Vitamin C is also an antioxidant and can improve immune system function.

These health benefits are not unique to orange juice. You can get these same important nutrients by eating an orange, and in fact, it's a much healthier alternative.

<span style="font-family: "tahoma"; font-size: large;">The health risks of orange juice

Though orange juice has health-boosting nutrients, it may not be as good for you as it seems. "Orange juice isn't a health food," says Scott Kahan, MD, MPH, director of the National Center for Weight and Wellness.

<span style="font-family: "tahoma"; font-size: large;">Blood sugar spikes and diabetes

Orange juice has about as much sugar and calories as soda, Kahan says. An 8 oz. glass of Coca Cola, for example, has 26 grams of sugar, compared with 22 grams in orange juice.

"People with diabetes should be especially careful to avoid over-consuming orange juice," Kahan says, as sugary drinks can spike your blood sugar. Over time, blood sugar spikes can lead to dangerous conditions like heart disease and kidney disease, even for people without diabetes.

<span style="font-family: "tahoma"; font-size: large;">Weight gain

Some experts recommend that adults and children should eat whole fruit instead of drinking fruit juices. This is because fruit contains fiber, which slows down the process of digestion and makes you feel more full.

Studies show that drinking juice without getting the natural fiber from fruits is linked to obesity and liver damage. This is because when you drink fruit juice, you can quickly consume the juice of multiple fruits without feeling full, making it easy to take in large amounts of sugar.

If you have trouble managing your weight, it's best to avoid sugary drinks like orange juice, Kahan says. This is because when you take in extra calories from a drink, you are less likely to compensate by eating less, while adding extra food may cause you to eat a smaller meal later.

A 2011 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that people who drank 100% fruit juice gained more weight over 4 years than people who stayed away from it. Juice was not the main culprit in weight gain, however, as sugar-sweetened beverages caused twice as much weight gain.

<span style="font-family: "tahoma"; font-size: large;">The bottom line

"If you really enjoy orange juice, then it may be worth incorporating in moderate amounts into a balanced diet," Kahan says. "However, it shouldn't be considered a health food."

Doctors recommend that if you do want to drink orange juice, adults and children should limit it to one small glass per day. If you are looking to get your daily dose of vitamin C, the healthiest option may be to just eat an orange.

Kahan also says that diluting orange juice with water could be a helpful option to avoid taking in as much sugar. You should also double-check ingredient labels, as some brands may add extra sugar.Gaylehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16706619535026184775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4470199949426953561.post-56298721748481987022020-06-18T05:32:00.002-05:002020-06-18T05:32:23.705-05:00How your drinks will look totally different after coronavirus

When you order a vodka sprite or gin and tonic, you probably expect it to come with a lime wedge. The same goes for a slice of a pineapple with a piña colada, cherries in a shirley temple and a lemon slice for water or a Diet Coke. Fruit garnishes are a part of drink culture, but after the coronavirus outbreak, establiments might opt to have them served upon request only, on the side or not at all.

According to research 46% of people surveyed said they want their drinks garnished upon request only. This answer was most prominent among baby boomers.

A quarter of respondents want their garnish served on the side, and 29% would rather skip it altogether. Why? Because fruit garnishes have had a reputation for being a hidden source of bacteria long before coronavirus.

Several studies have found lemon wedges in drinks can be contaminated with microorganisms that cause illness and disease. These germs can come from people handling them who don't wash their hands well or from tools used to cut or serve them that are not properly cleaned.

All things considered, you might want to ask for your garnish on the side or skip it altogether the next time you step out for a drink. Drink garnishes are just one of diners' many concerns about the restaurant experience after coronavirus.Gaylehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16706619535026184775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4470199949426953561.post-77884927690145050722020-06-14T06:11:00.001-05:002020-06-14T06:11:51.050-05:00June 14 2020

It's time to talk about the protest, riots, and defunding the police departments, last but not least the pandemic.

Check out this episode!
Gaylehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16706619535026184775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4470199949426953561.post-58152413517885614552020-06-06T06:14:00.001-05:002020-06-06T06:14:06.504-05:00So Crispy you’ll think you’re in heaven!

Necco Wafers first came out in 1847, making them one of the oldest candy brands in existence, according to the Spangler Candy Company. They were discontinued in 2018, but they just couldn’t stay away, because the candies are coming back this summer.

If you’re not familiar with the candy, they come in disk shapes and in an assortment of flavors. You might recognize their wax paper rolls packaging with “Necco” across them, which is an acronym for New England Confectionary Company, the original company that made them.

Necco is coming back in the eight all-time favorite flavors: lemon (yellow), lime (green), orange (orange), clove (light purple), cinnamon (white), wintergreen (pink), licorice (dark grey), and chocolate (brown). Seven of them were designed to identically match the originals. The chocolate ones have a richer cocoa flavor this time around due to a minor change in the cooking process.

“Just when comfort food is experiencing a resurgence, Necco Wafers is back with that very kind of familiar, comfortable feeling we all seem to be craving,” Kirk Vashaw, CEO of Spangler Candy Company, said in a press release. “We are delighted to bring Necco Wafers back itno production and to share in their sweet return with fans old and new.”

The Necco Wafers will first begin to roll out in major drugstores and some grocery stores in June 2020, followed by more retailers in July 2020. From Walgreens to CVS to Kroger to Big Lots, you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding them near you. Here’s the list of stores where you’ll be able to get them.

You have to love a throwback, especially when it comes to food, even if we only said goodbye to them 2 years ago.Gaylehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16706619535026184775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4470199949426953561.post-40055758561996389282020-06-03T01:03:00.001-05:002020-06-03T01:03:58.902-05:00Pirate radio station helps older adults deal with loneliness

The show launched in April and only planned to go for about a month, but demand and response was so overwhelming that it's still going strong with no plans to end anytime soon.

Fart, toot, flatulence, or a bit of wind. No matter what you call it, it’s embarrassing when foul-smelling gas slips out in public. Some people wonder why this happens. So, what are 20 things that cause you to fart?

When a large amount of gas is in our stomach or intestines, you get bloated and gassy. This excess makes you fart, which is just your body getting rid of the gas. Farts can stink to high heaven. This odor is because the gas escaping from your anus contains sulfur, which can have a rotten egg smell to it.

DO YOU HAVE FART A LOT?

It may seem obvious when you have gas, but there are several symptoms of gas you may not be as aware of

Lots of burping-Belching or burping during or after meals is typical. But if you are burping a lot, it could be because you swallowed too much air while you were eating. The wind didn’t reach your stomach but escaped through your mouth.

Farting-You fart around thirteen to twenty-one times a day. Believe it or not, most people on average have anywhere from .5 to 1.5 liters of gas floating around in their digestive tract.

Bloating-When your stomach feels full and maybe swollen. Air is not expelling as a burp or a fart.

Pain in your stomach– This condition happens when you have a lot of air in your stomach that doesn’t move through your intestines.

THINGS THAT CAUSE YOU TO FART

Everybody farts, but some everyday things cause farting.

1. SWALLOWING AIR

It’s common to swallow air when you eat or drink. Certain foods or drinks cause you to take in more breath than usual, and this makes you fart or burp. These include.

Carbonated sodas, seltzer water

Chewing gum

Hard candies

You also swallow air when you do some things

Smoke

Drink too quickly

Eat too quickly

Wear loose-fitting dentures

When you swallow air, you’ll burp, but some air goes into your stomach then into your intestines, causing you to fart.

2. BACTERIA IN THE LARGE INTESTINE

Sometimes your stomach and small intestine don’t wholly digest foods-especially fibers, sugar, or starches. These undigested carbs move into your large intestine, where they start to ferment as the bacteria begin to break them down. The result is especially smelly farts that could make your cat pass out.

3. EATING GAS-PRODUCING FOODS

Some foods have a reputation for causing gas.

Cruciferous vegetables-cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts

Legumes-lentils, black beans, pinto beans, kidney beans

High fructose fruits-apples, watermelon, mango

Sweeteners-Xylitol, sorbitol, and mannitol can cause bloating and gas

Sodas-The combination of carbonation and sugar can pack a punch when it comes to producing gas.

4. HAVING IBS

Irritable bowel syndrome or IBS causes bloating, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. If you notice that you get gas when you eat certain foods, you may want to try to eliminate these foods. Most people who have IBS eat a Low FODMAP diet to ease their symptoms. FODMAP stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharide, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols, which are carbohydrates and sugar alcohols that your body doesn’t easily digest.

5. HORMONAL CHANGES

As if going through menopause isn’t enough, hormonal changes like this increase the gas in your body. Doctors aren’t sure if this is due to progesterone or estrogen, but studies show that postmenopausal women said they had changes in their bowels, such as excess farting.

6. YOU’RE LACTOSE INTOLERANT

If you’re lactose intolerant, your body can’t completely digest the lactose found in milk and milk products. Lactose intolerance is uncomfortable and embarrassing if you fart a lot after eating dairy products. This scenario happens because your body doesn’t have enough of an enzyme called lactase. Most people who are lactose intolerant can substitute milk and dairy products for almond milk, coconut milk, and cheeses made from nut fats (like cashew cheese).

5. CELIAC DISEASE

Celiac disease or CD is a rare disease. Those who have CD suffer from bloating and excessive farting, which can cause embarrassment and discomfort. Many people with CD avoid social or professional gatherings. It’s a rare disease that isn’t serious but can lead to complications like anemia, malabsorption, osteoporosis, or internal lymphoma.
Studies found that CD is very rare. Many people who think they have it have Irritable bowel disease, pancreatic insufficiency, lactose intolerance, or an overgrowth of bacterial growth in the intestines. If you’re diagnosed with CD, you should eat a gluten-free diet to reduce symptoms.

8. FRUCTOSE INTOLERANCE

If you have fructose intolerance, your body can’t digest sugar fructose, which is the simple sugars in fruits. Eliminating high fructose foods helps reduce the side effects of fructose intolerance like farting and bloating.
Studies found that some people suffer from hereditary fructose intolerance because they lack an enzyme that helps break down the fructose. This deficiency makes them prone to conditions like hypoglycemia or low blood sugar or liver problems.

9. SMOKING

Studies suggest that although smoking doesn’t cause farting directly, indirectly, it contributes to the problem. This outcome is because smoking affects your digestive system causing heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, ulcers, and some liver diseases. Smoking puts you at risk for heartburn, which causes burping and farting.

10. CONSTIPATION AND HOT FARTS

No, the term “hot farts” does not refer to the name of a new rock band. When you’re constipated, your gastro system doesn’t work correctly, so you get backed up. This crowding means there is less room for gas to move around.
You won’t pass as much gas, so your farts come out hot or warm. Other things that can cause hot farts are spicy foods, too tight of pants, and diarrhea. So, if anyone asks you about hot farts, consider yourself informed.

11. OVERGROWTH OF BACTERIA

If you have an increase in bacteria in your small intestines, you’ll end up with gassiness. Bacterial imbalances in your gut happen when you’ve had the stomach flu or an infection. It takes a while for your gut to get back to the right balance of flora in your gut. In the meantime, you’ll be tooting more. Take probiotics to help your gut return to normal

12. PEPTIC ULCERS

A peptic ulcer causes a tear in the lining of your stomach and your small intestine’s upper area. The symptoms often get worse at night with burning and severe pain. One study reported that people who have peptic ulcers have symptoms like gut discomfort, flatulence, nausea, or vomiting three hours after eating.

13. TOO MUCH FIBER

All you hear about is to eat lots of fiber, but you can overeat fiber. The tough parts of some plants can cause problems for some people. The body has trouble digesting it. Undigested foods get to the large intestine or colon, so bacteria in the bowels start to ferment, which produces smelly farts. Both soluble and insoluble fibers can cause this in plants such as beans, greens, fruits, and some vegetables. Eat a balanced diet of grain and other food so you won’t overload your gut.

14. DIABETES

If you have diabetes, you will be prone to excess farts. This is because of the medications you take or the excess glucose in your blood. All in all, your gut bacteria balance is off, so you will find yourself tooting a lot.

15. EATING HIGH SULFUR FOODS

Eating foods high in sulfur causes some people trouble. These foods and drinks include:

Beer

Wine

Cider

Apple juice

Grape juice

Dried fruits

Alum vegetables: onions, garlic, chives, leeks, shallots

Cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, cabbage

Certain nuts, grains, and meats also are high in sulfur and cause you to fart more than usual.

16. GLUTEN INTOLERANCE

For some people, gluten is a problem. It causes a swollen stomach and lots of farting. Gluten is a protein that’s in wheat, barley, and rye. It’s also hidden in soy sauce, beer, and even some tortilla chips.

17. PROCESSED FOODS

You knew that processed and fast foods weren’t healthy, but did you know they make you fart? Burgers, pizza, and fries are high in fat and low in nutrition. Overeating processed food will upset your gut health. You’ll feel more bloated, burp more, and fart a lot. So ditch the fast food for fewer farts.

18. SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO YOUR DIET

If you’ve made any significant changes to your diet, you may experience gas and excess farting. Going vegan or vegetarian, cutting out, or adding food to your regular diet can upset your gut’s balance. Your stomach should settle down eventually, but in the meantime, you’ll probably be tooting up a storm.

19. FLYING

You may never fly again without thinking about this fact: flying makes you fart. If you don’t believe it, the Study that says flatulence occurs when you’re flying due to cabin pressure changes. If you try to hold it in, you’ll feel very uncomfortable. But letting it rip will cause you social discomfort. It’s a problem. Don’t say you weren’t warned.

20. HEALTHY EATING

So you try hard to eat well, and what do you get? Farts. That’s right; many of the healthy foods you eat don’t get digested at the same time. Undigested foods that sit in the small intestine start to ferment, causing smelly old farts. It doesn’t seem fair, our healthiest foods like vegetables, whole grains, and beans, cause the smelliest farts.Gaylehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16706619535026184775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4470199949426953561.post-4025638609647013862020-06-01T06:46:00.002-05:002020-06-01T06:46:12.989-05:00One-Pot, One-Pan Dinners that will Free Up Your Weeknigh

Step 1

When it comes to clothes shopping, nothing can replace the in-person experience of trying on an item in the changing room. But are fitting rooms safe in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic? Some major retailers, including Nordstrom and Macy's, have released details on how they will keep fitting rooms safe and clean as they slowly reopen.

Nordstrom, which has reopened about 35 stores across the South so far, says they are keeping some changing rooms closed to ensure social distancing, and are cleaning fitting rooms between each use. Also, after a customer tries something on or returns an item, the item will be put on hold for a period of time before returning to the sales floor.

Signs, stickers on the ground, and employees will help guide customers and keep them safe while shopping, Jamie Nordstrom, president of stores for Nordstrom said. “We certainly will have a lot of visual cues as you enter, we'll have some stickers on the ground, we'll have lots of signs,” Nordstrom said. “But the way that we deliver service and have for a long time is through people. The most important person is that greeter at the door who explains to the customer what's going on, what they can expect.”

As Macy’s stores reopen, the retailer has said it will keep some fitting rooms closed and hold items that were tried on or returned for 24 hours before placing them on store racks.
Gap has said it is reopening most of its changing rooms. “In response to customer demand, we’re reopening most of our fitting rooms and increasing regular cleaning,” the company said on its website.

Dr. Tista Ghosh, senior medical director at the health care company Grand Rounds, said if people do visit a mall or clothing store, they should remain vigilant about social distancing, use hand sanitizer, avoid touching their face and, if possible, avoid elevators, where it’s hard to practice social distancing.

Many stores and malls are helping shoppers follow these safety measures. For example, Simon, the largest mall operator in the U.S., says all its locations will provide free masks and sanitizing wipe packets to shoppers, and will encourage people to stay 6 feet apart via signage and public service announcements.

On the other hand, if shoppers see a store, clothing or otherwise, that is not requiring masks or does not offer hand sanitizer or wipes, I recommend steering clear. “I personally would not go in. To me that's a sign that they're not taking it seriously,” And they're needlessly putting people at risk.Gaylehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16706619535026184775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4470199949426953561.post-3994756835830543982020-05-30T03:55:00.001-05:002020-05-30T03:55:22.438-05:00Easy Cheeseburger Pie

Bill the turkey is on the road to recovery, thanks to his one-of-a-kind wheelchair!

After first making a trip to the vet for guidance on how to treat the 60 lb. turkey’s "bum foot," his caretakers at the Odd Man Inn Animal Refuge were told that in addition to caring for his injury, Bill needed to lose some weight.

Recognizing that they’d need to think outside of the box to figure out a way to keep Bill active while still protecting his injury, they decided to create the first-ever turkey wheelchair, which they converted from a Walkin’ Wheels wheelchair, originally designed for a dog,

In order to make the wheelchair usable, the farm added in a makeshift sling, which supports Bill from underneath, enabling him to get in all the exercise he needs without being weighed down.
Explaining exactly how this works on Instagram, the farm shared that they used "a maternity girdle" to make the sling.Gaylehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16706619535026184775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4470199949426953561.post-43050759012391269352020-05-28T05:29:00.003-05:002020-05-28T05:29:56.957-05:00You've Been Storing Cheese Wrong Your Whole Life 🧀

Do you make a beeline to the charcuterie board at parties? Are you always the first person to schedule wine and cheese nights? Do you drool over videos of ooey, gooey, stretched cheese? Then it's confirmed: you're a cheese fanatic. But despite your love of all things cheese, we're sorry to tell you that you've probably been storing cheese wrong your entire life. The good news is that it's not a big deal, because I’m about to teach you how to store cheese properly so it lasts longer, maintains flavor, and doesn't have to end up molded in the garbage.

I reached out to cheese experts to find out the common mistakes people make when storing cheese, the proper way to store cheese, and the best tools you need to keep cheese fresh. To keep even more foods besides cheese fresh, you're going to want to invest in these 14 Best Kitchen Tools for Helping Food Stay Fresh.

Why storing cheese in plastic wrap is a huge mistake

Yes, many cheeses you buy come wrapped in plastic wrap. And yes, you use plastic wrap to store most of your leftovers without a problem. But storing cheese in plastic wrap is the worst thing you can do if you want to keep your cheese fresh.

"Plastic wrap is by design a full barrier, and cheese needs air and humidity to breathe," says Joey Wells, Global Senior Coordinator for Specialty Cheese Product Innovation and Development at Whole Foods Market. "Additionally, cheese can act as a sponge, absorbing the plasticizers that give plastic wrap its ability to stretch and cling, which you don't want. Both of these issues affect the flavor of cheese and also suffocate it, causing it to lose shelf life."
So if you shouldn't use plastic to store cheese, what should you use to extend its shelf life?
The best tools to store cheese

"There are a variety of ways to store cheese and no single way is necessarily correct," says Venae Watts, a fifth-generation member of America's oldest family-owned creamery, Minerva Dairy.
So let's take a look at every way experts recommend you can store cheese:

Specialty cheese paper: "When storing cheese, specialty cheese paper and bags are best. Specialty paper is a two-ply product that allows cheese to breathe while maintaining humidity," says Wells. "One cheese-wrap outfitter, Formaticum, uses a two-ply material—wax-coated paper lined with thin, porous polyethylene plastic—in both its and . This combination (often used by professional cheesemongers) lets moisture wick off the cheese but not escape entirely," says Lisa McManus, the Executive Tasting&Testing Editor at America's Test Kitchen.

Parchment or wax paper: "If [specialty cheese paper] is not available, you can loosely wrap your cheese with parchment or wax paper, which still protects it from drying, while keeping it exposed to the air and humidity it needs," says Wells.

: "This allows the cheese to create its own temperature and humidity. In essence preserving the cheese in its own atmosphere," says Watts. "These domes have proven themselves year after year and also make for great kitchen decor."

Vinegar: Surprising, but true. "Putting a small amount of vinegar onto cheesecloth or a paper towel before storing your cheese will help save it from mold. The vinegar acts as a kind of barrier and kills mold," says Watts. "You may be thinking your cheese will taste like vinegar when you go to eat it, but it won't."

Research shows that consuming substantial amounts of caffeine even six hours before bedtime can disrupt your sleep quality.

2. You're feeling anxious.

Thus, drinking even moderate amounts of caffeine can lead to feelings of anxiety and stress—especially if you already struggle with a general anxiety disorder. One study in healthy adult men found those given 300 mg of caffeine (about three cups of coffee) prior to a stressful task reported increases in blood pressure, stress hormones, and double the reported stress levels compared to those given a placebo.

3. You're experiencing the "laxative effect."

Maybe you've already noticed this, but coffee makes you poop. The caffeine in your java activates your colon and results in an increased need to, well, go. According to the International Foundation for Gastrointestinal Disorders, drinking just two or three cups of coffee a day is enough to cause diarrhea—and you better hope that urge doesn't hit in the middle of that board meeting.

4. You have the jitters.

"Caffeine speeds up your central nervous system," says McGrane. "As a result, drinking more than moderate amounts of coffee—about three cups in individuals not sensitive to caffeine—can cause you to feel shaky. You may even notice nausea or feel like your heart is racing."

5. You've gained weight.

"Unless you drink it black, consuming several cups of coffee with milk, cream, or sugar per day can add up calorie-wise," says McGrane. "Overtime, those extra calories can lead to increases on the scale."

A guide to ordering food during a pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic has given everyone a lot of food for thought on whether or not it's safe to order food for takeout, delivery or pick-up. The short answer is yes, it's safe – but it's better to take a few extra steps to be sure. From the best way to order and tipping to proper packaging handling, here is a list of practices to follow.

Thoroughly wash your hands

All the experts agree: the single most important thing you can do when it comes to ordering takeout is to wash your hands, frequently. Wash them or use sanitizer after you handle delivery bags and containers and always before you eat.

Research your delivery app

Want to order food? There's an app for that. Actually, there are several apps for that – but they're not all created equal. There are some notable differences in how much some apps charge, how they treat their drivers and how well they support the restaurants they work with.

Some apps are greedier than others

Delivery numbers have spiked amid the coronavirus crisis and some apps have upped their fees for either users, restaurants or both. In fact, New York City has now placed a cap on how much delivery apps can charge restaurants to use their services. And apps operating in Chicago must provide itemized receipts that show exactly where (and to whom) your money goes.

Order directly from restaurants if you can

Delivery apps are popular but restaurants benefit the most from direct orders. If you really want to support your local dining scene or favorite restaurant, check and see if it offers direct delivery.

Ask about safety precautions

Before ordering, check with the restaurant and ask what precautions are in place when it comes to the people who are handling your food. Getting this kind of feedback can help you decide if you feel comfortable ordering food from them.

Know the rules and recommendations

It may come as a surprise but the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises food workers not to wear gloves when preparing or packaging food. Why? They found that workers tended to wash their hands less when they were wearing gloves. The specific rules and regulations will vary from city to city and country to country, so do your research and know the protocols they should be following before you call.

Hold disposable utensils

Request your delivery order without disposable cutlery. Not only does it lower any cross-contamination risk, but it also means less waste which is better for the environment. You've got your own forks, knives and spoons at home so there's no excuse!

Tip your driver well

While lockdowns persist and reopenings come in phases, delivery is one of the only things keeping restaurants afloat. Delivery people are an essential part of that operation. Many food delivery drivers were struggling with questionable working conditions and pay before the pandemic hit. Being a generous tipper during these hard times is a great way to show your appreciation for them.

Put your delivery bag in the kitchen sink

Got the goods? Put the bag into your kitchen sink to keep possible contamination under control. The catch? You just have to be ready with a clean, dry sink by the time the food arrives. Sometimes that's easier said than remembered.

Clear an area to sort delivery containers

Your sink may be big enough to hold your delivery bag but chances are you'll need a little space to unpack containers. Think ahead and clear off enough space on the counter so you're ready when the bell rings and your food arrives. Try to make enough space so the containers won't be touching – and possibly contaminating – anything nearby.

Re-plate food before eating

We know you're hungry but resist the urge to eat food straight out of the takeout container. Studies show that the virus can live on cardboard for up to 24 hours and on plastic for several days. Stay safe and transfer food into a dish or plate you've got at home before eating it.

Wash or sanitize hands between each step

Wash or use hand sanitizer before you move food from the takeout container into your own dishes, or use utensils like a spoon, spatula or fork. Remember your hands will have been exposed to whatever contaminates may be on the takeout bags and containers and that could easily transfer to your food without the proper precautions.

Throw away all delivery containers and bags

As the virus can survive on common delivery container surfaces like cardboard and plastic, it's best to toss delivery containers after you transfer the food into your own dishes. Don't forget to wash your hands afterwards!

Wipe down the counter and sink

After you've transferred your food onto your own dishes and thrown away the takeout containers, give the sink and counter a thorough clean with antibacterial disinfectant to remove any possible contagions from the containers.

The riskiest part of delivery is the handoff

Worried your food might infect you? Your concern is mostly misguided. The most dangerous part of ordering takeout isn't the food, it's the delivery. Face-to-face delivery handoffs put both you and your delivery person in danger since it requires contact. Think about all the different people the delivery person may have come into contact with while making their deliveries. If you must do a direct handoff, be sure to wear a mask and gloves.

Choose contactless delivery whenever possible

The safest delivery method is contactless delivery. This option is becoming more and more popular and is easy to request, even if you don't see it listed when you order. All it means is that your food will be delivered without any face-to-face interaction with the delivery person. They will either leave it outside your front door, in your apartment lobby or in the building stairwell, and text or call to let you know it's been delivered.

Prepay for your meal and the tip

If you're still paying for your delivery with cash, it's time to change your ways. Cash may be king but it's also carrying germs and usually requires some kind of face-to-face handoff, which is best to avoid. Most delivery apps and websites have a card or PayPal option which is a safer payment choice.

Wear a mask at the drive-thru

Getting your food from a drive-thru? Wear a mask when you approach the pick-up window to help protect you. Drive-thru pick-ups are a little riskier than curbside or delivery since you will have a direct handoff, so be prepared and take precautions.

Place pick-up orders on the floor of your car

Immediately put any to-go bags somewhere on the floor of your car. This way, you're keeping any possible contamination in an area that doesn't touch much except the bottom of your shoes. If you want to be extra careful, lay down a paper towel first and just bin it afterwards.

Have hand sanitizer at the ready

Keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in the car for easy access after handling your pick-up food. Sanitize your hands each time after touching the takeout bag or removing any gloves, and before touching anything else in the car like the steering wheel or hand brake.

Remove any unnecessary outer packaging

If you're unpacking a grocery delivery, throw away extra exterior packaging. Things like packs of crackers, cereal and noodle cups often have a layer of cardboard or plastic shrink wrap that can be removed easily and won't be missed. Removing this kind of packaging means you'll have less to worry about when handling or wiping down your groceries.

Food is safer than you may think

Worried that you might contract coronavirus from your food? According to experts, it's not likely. COVID-19 is a respiratory disease which means it's not spread through food ingestion. And, although it's not nice to think about a cook accidentally sneezing or coughing while preparing your food, the likelihood of catching the virus in this way is low.

Wash your hands before eating

If there's only one thing you take away from this, let it be that you need to wash your hands before you eat. Use soapy water and lather up for 20 to 30 seconds. This will effectively kill any possible bits of the virus that you may have come into contact with on your food packaging. Now, relax, enjoy and eat!Gaylehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16706619535026184775noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4470199949426953561.post-86767810699549012332020-05-25T04:03:00.001-05:002020-05-25T04:03:41.051-05:007 Myths About Reopening You Need to Stop Believing

And as states start to reopen and lockdown orders begin to lift, more myths and misconceptions are coming to light. Are things just going to go back to exactly how they were before quarantine? Will everything reopen at once? Can businesses or states be forced to reopen? This is the truth behind the reopening myths you need to stop believing. And for more things you should expect as places reopen.

1. Everything will go back to normal immediately.

According to an April Azurite Consulting survey, while some industries may rebound pretty quickly, it is not expected that business conditions will return to the same level they were at in Dec. 2019 any time soon. In fact, there are some things many Americans say they won't do, even as reopening starts, until there is a coronavirus vaccine. In the survey, 41 percent said they won't go to a theater, opera, or concert until there is a vaccine; 28 percent of frequent gym-goers said they would wait for a vaccine; and 24 percent of Americans said they won't return to a sit-down restaurant before a vaccine is available. And for more changes to prepare for, check out these 7 Things You Won't See at Retail Stores Ever Again After Coronavirus.

2. Prices will be the same as they were before.

If restaurants open up in your state, your dining experience won't be the only thing that might change. That is, don't expect the prices at your favorite restaurant to be the same. Delish reported that while this will vary by restaurant, many establishments are adding a temporary fee (around 5 perfect) to help offset rising food prices and limited seating capacity. Others are simply "adding" the tax into increased menu prices. And as long as it's disclosed to customers before.

3. Everything will reopen at the same time in your area.

Just because your state has reopened some businesses doesn't mean they're all open. Most states are reopening in phases, or just reopening partially. However, many people expect that if they can go to one business in their area, they can go to them all. According to The New York Times, Idaho's stay-at-home order started lifting May 1, but nightclubs and movie theaters remained closed. And Massachusetts reportedly opened houses of worship and golf courses on May 18, but won't allow hair salons or beaches to open until May 25. And for places to avoid when things reopen, learn which 7 Places You Shouldn't Visit Even If They're Open.

4. The federal government can force states to reopen.

It's confusing to know exactly who is in charge of lifting lockdowns. Can the federal government just come out and say that everyone has to reopen? As David Swindell, an associate professor of public affairs at Arizona State University, wrote for The Conversation, that can't happen. State and local governments are responsible for regulating the businesses within their borders, and the federal government can't order them to reopen their businesses, he says. However, the federal government can decide to give more federal money which goes to a variety of programs, like criminal justice, education, and highways to those that follow federal requests, and potentially cut funding for states that don't, so they do have a significant influence.

5. Businesses can defy ongoing shutdown orders.

Businesses also can't just decide to reopen for themselves. If their state governments still have shutdown orders, they have to follow suit. According to Snopes, there was a rumor that citizens and businesses could defy shutdown orders and win damages in court if they were arrested for defying, on the premise that the Constitution supersedes lockdown orders. However, on May 6, the U.S. Supreme Court sided with Pennsylvania's shutdown order, refusing to lift the order for businesses (which included a golf course, laundromat, timber company, real-estate agent, and political committee) that claimed their constitutional rights were being violated by the shutdown order.

6. Public hand dryers can kill the coronavirus.

As businesses reopen, the rumor that the automatic hand dryers in public restrooms will kill the coronavirus has surfaced. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) calls this a myth. According to the organization, hand dryers do not kill the coronavirus, and people should still be frequently washing their hands with soap and water.

7. Wearing a face mask will prevent you from catching the coronavirus.

While many reopened businesses are recommending or requiring that people wear face masks to enter, the face mask isn't preventing you from catching the coronavirus. Instead, it's keeping everyone safe from you. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cloth face coverings prevent the person wearing them from spreading droplets when they talk, sneeze, or cough. And even if you don't think you have the virus, you could be asymptomatic (not showing symptoms) and spread it without realizing. When people in a business wear face masks, they're helping protect everyone else in the building. Before I start this article let me first show you what was living in my back yard in south east Texas, not albino because the eyes was not red. This squirrel came every day to get acorns on the ground so I know it lived near by. I would go out back each day just to check on the little squirrel because there was many stray cats that would get in my yard to hunt lizards, the little squirrel I suppose is still living there even though I sold the property last year.

Squirrel in Bloomfield township

A woman in Bloomfield Township just found a fresh upside for sheltering in place: getting to know who’s in your backyard. In her case? A white squirrel. Like the occasional white deer, they're rare. Meredith Meyer said the comely creature was easy to spot.
“I was taking my dog out in my yard and I caught a glimpse of it. It’s really noticeable because it’s really white. I took my dog inside because I wanted to grab my new camera. It had relocated to another tree but I spotted it right away,” Meyer said.

“I’d be interested to know if anybody else has seen one of these. He was really, really cool. Just for the record, I did not use Clairol on it,” she said, chuckling.

The Free Press is sending Meyer to the white-squirrel pages of UntamedScience.com, in case she wants to report her sighting. The website tracks sightings around North America. A map shows several sightings around metro Detroit and also half a dozen towns in eastern and central U.S. where white squirrels are downright numerous. But their closest haven to Detroit is Exeter, Ontario, northeast of Port Huron, which bills itself “home of the white squirrel” at least in Canada.

The website echoes just what Meyer said: That her squirrel, because it has dark eyes, is not an albino, which is even rarer and possesses red eyes. Instead, hers is a “white morph.” Both morphs and albinos are freaks of nature but they're natural mutations, according to wildlife experts.
Meyer said she spotted her backyard visitor at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
“I trespassed into my neighbors’ yard, in my pajamas, because I wanted to catch it” on her camera a recent gift.

“I think during quarantine, I’ve seen so many of my friends posting pictures of wildlife. We’re all spending more time at home. We’re enjoying our homes a lot more. That’s why my family bought the camera for Mother’s Day. I would not have gotten those pictures with my cell phone," she said.
She hasn’t seen the white squirrel since, even after planting herself on her patio. No one else in the neighborhood has either at last, none chimed in on Facebook about it. She’s hoping the furry newcomer is safe in woods at the back of the family’s big yard.

“My only worry is, we have had a coyote sighting, and because he’s white, they say the white animals are more vulnerable to predators,” she said.

We’ve always been big fans of cocktails. But without bars and restaurants to lean on for our fix, our appreciation for quality homemade mixed drinks has increased exponentially in the past who-knows-how-many-weeks.

I’ll jump on any mention of a new method for making a better from-scratch margarita (skip the Triple Sec and use fresh-squeezed OJ) or a way to reinvent the Moscow mule (make them into slushies), but my favorite home-mixology experiment to date has been incorporating as many fresh herbs, spices, and fresh-slash-frozen fruits as possible. Between the finally-growing herbs on my countertop and a pantry filled with an excess of nothing but booze, spice bottles, banana bread, and frozen blueberries, making infused cocktails has been a solid creative outlet and for me and my sanity. The drinks are delicious, too.

Ute Londrigan, founder and owner of Heimat New York Handcrafted Fruit Liqueurs, agrees. “Fresh mint in mojitos or mint juleps are well-known options, but there are endless possibilities for crafting cocktails using garden herbs and even fresh fruit,” she says. “Whether it’s fresh basil or rosemary from your garden or cinnamon sticks from the market, bringing herbs and spices into your home bar opens up so many flavor possibilities.”

According to Londrigan, the best way to make cocktails using fresh herbs is the classic technique. No fancy infuser equipment required; all you need is a muddler and a shaker. “Make it as simple as possible by muddling your favorite type of fresh herbs in a shaker followed by adding all other ingredients (like liquor or fruit), shake it, strain, and serve. You’ll enjoy a whole new flavor profile,” she says. “And for an even more herbaceous flavor, try muddling together multiple herbs like mint, basil, and tarragon.”

How to Match Herbs With Spirits

Basil: Its mild and slightly sweet flavor pairs especially well with gin, vodka, or rum.
Mint: Mint's sweet, refreshing taste works well with all different liquors. Vodka, rum, tequila, and bourbon (just to name a few).
Thyme: Thyme’s very earthy—with a hint of mint—profile is best served by clear spirits like gin or vodka, but it also works with bourbon.
Rosemary: Rosemary has a lemon-pine flavor with notes of woodsiness and pepper, which makes it a great pairing for rum, tequila, vodka, and whiskey cocktails.
Ginger: It’s as hot, zesty, and biting as it is sweet and warm. Ginger is very versatile and goes well with any liquor, but rum and vodka are the best.
Lemongrass: It’ll add a refreshing and tart flavor profile to gin or tequila cocktails.
Cinnamon: Cinnamon is aromatic and offers a woodsy, musty and earthy flavor which plays well with bourbon, whiskey, rum or hard cider. Cinnamon sticks can easily be added, or used as a natural stir stick. Also nice: infuse it in a simple syrup (or the spirit itself—see below).

Infuse Your Spirits

“Infusing spirits is another great way to use herbs in cocktails,” says Londrigan. Simply pour your liquor of choice into a mason jar and add spices, herbs, or fruits, cover and let stand in a cool dark place for two to three days, or until it reaches your desired flavor. Because liquor is high proof, no refrigeration is necessary. “Test it out every couple days; once you’re happy with the flavor, it means it’s ready to use in your favorite cocktail.”

Adding Fresh or Frozen Fruit

“I love to use fresh fruit from the farmers' market when making cocktails,” Londrigan says. “And as an alternative, frozen fruits. Berries in particular work well.” Adding fruit with your fresh herbs gives your drink another dimension. Here are the two best methods:
Muddle
Like herbs, you can simply muddle them in your shaker before adding the other ingredients or use them to infuse your spirit.
Stew
This is a great way to take a margarita to the next level. Stew your fruit on the stove top (fresh or frozen) until it’s nice and soft. Once cooled, strain it through a fine mesh so that no pieces are left. The result is a delicious syrup that offers rich fruit flavor that is much deeper with a more vibrant color. Simply add ice, tequila, citrus juice, and your fruit syrup to a shaker, then shake vigorously to combine and pour into your favorite serving glass.
Dogs will eat any food they can find. Whether it's dog food, cat food, something you dropped on the ground while eating dinner, or garbage they find on their walk, they don't discriminate. We can assume that the garbage your dog finds on the road isn't healthy for him, but is it bad if your dog occasionally eats the leftovers your cat left in her bowl? Can dogs eat cat food? If your cat is the pet in your house that loves to eat, learn if cats can eat dog food.

<span style="font-family: "tahoma"; font-size: large;">Can dogs eat cat food?

The simple answer to "can dogs eat cat food" is no, dogs should not eat cat food. "The nutritional profile for cat food is different than dog food, so it's not something they should be eating instead of dog food," says Dr. Gary Richter, Veterinary Health Expert with Rover. But he says if they sneak a bit every now and then, it's not going to hurt them.

"Cat food tends to be higher in protein and fat," says Richter. "[If a dog eats cat food it could] potentially cause GI upset, but that would depend on the dog." Cat food isn't harmful to dogs, but it's not going to provide them with the proper nutrients and optimal nutrition. If your dog seems to like your cat's food better than his own, try switching to one of the best dog foods brands that vets feed to their dogs.

Some symptoms to watch out for if you suspect your dog might be eating cat food are vomiting and diarrhea. An upset stomach is possible due to the higher fat content in cat food.
<span style="font-family: "tahoma"; font-size: large;">How can you get your dog to stop eating cat food?
If you own a cat and a dog, feeding time can be a challenge. First, try feeding them in different rooms or at different times of the day. Lock your cat (or dog) in their own room until they finish their meal. If your cat slowly picks at her food throughout the day, you can try putting the bowl up on a window ledge or the counter—a place where the dog can't get to it. Now that you know not to feed your dog cat food, make sure you avoid these other mistakes that every dog owner makes.

During my downtime I re-watched this all time popular series for things I had maybe missed the first time I watched Lost, if you have not ever watched Lost you can binge watch every season on Amazon Prime, but it is worth watching a second time too. I recommend this series

The show contains elements of supernatural and science fiction, and follows the survivors of a commercial jet airliner flying between Sydney and Los Angeles, after the plane crashes on a mysterious island somewhere in the South Pacific Ocean. The story is told in a heavily serialized manner.
First episode date: September 22, 2004
Final episode date: May 23, 2010
Writer: Abrams, J.J., Adam Horowitz
Genre: Drama

What really happened in lost series?
To put it simply: If you think the characters in Lost were "dead the whole time," you are wrong. ... They died in the plane crash of Oceanic Flight 815, and the Island doesn't actually exist, it's just a representation of Purgatory where all of the characters are overcoming their personal demons after death.

Is Lost the greatest show ever?
Still, the creators should be happy with this latest accolade, as one episode of Lost has been voted the greatest TV episode of the century – and that's out of a list that included all the different forms of TV too, from reality to game show, drama to sci-fi. Which isn't bad going, really.

What happened to Walt in Lost?
He was eventually returned to his father in a prisoner exchange for Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and he and Michael left the Island on a motor boat. Since leaving the Island, Walt became estranged from his father and went to live with his grandmother in New York.

What happened to Claire on Lost?
Back in season four, Claire was taken away mysteriously by her dead(?) father, Christian, leaving her son Aaron behind, who was taken off the island by Kate as one of the Oceanic Six. Later, Locke (the real Locke… I think) met Christian and Claire inside Jacob's cabin, but something was certainly off about her.

How did everyone die in Lost?
To put it simply: If you think the characters in Lost were "dead the whole time," you are wrong, are all dead. They died in the plane crash of Oceanic Flight 815, and the Island doesn't actually exist, it's just a representation of Purgatory where all of the characters are overcoming their personal demons after death.

Does Sawyer die in Lost?
Sawyer will die. "I wish you had believed me," flash-sideways Jack says to Locke, the very same words Locke said to Jack in his original timeline suicide note, the very same thing island Jack could now say to Sawyer.

Does Locke die in Lost?
Locke is left for dead, but he wakes up days later. Locke contemplates suicide, but his faith is restored upon witnessing an apparition of Walt, who tells Locke that he's got "work to do".

What was the monster in Lost?
The Man in Black was a long-time inhabitant of the Island. He was once a normal man with dark hair and steely eyes, but an encounter with the Heart of the Island, brought on by his brother and enemy, changed him into the Smoke Monster, a living cloud of black smoke.

Are they all dead in Lost?
All season long, viewers see the characters rubbing shoulders with one another in LA, unaware of the events of the past five seasons. ... So, to clear up the confusion: in the flashsideways scenes, these characters are dead. But no, they were not dead all along after their plane crashed.

Does everyone die in Lost?
So when did everyone die on Lost? Sayid dies midway through season six saving his friends from a bomb, and Sun and Jin die later in the same episode, drowning together in a sinking submarine. And Jack dies at the end of the series finale, after being stabbed by the Man in Black.

How many hours is the show lost?
Time Requirements: 90 hours (3.75 days). Each episode averages about 43 minutes, so if you clock 10 hour-days (600 minutes, or about 14 episodes) on Saturdays and Sundays, it'll only take up a cool 4.5 weekends, or nine days, of your life.

Is Lost worth watching?
The series is never as incredible as it was in the first season, and there are chunks of the second and third seasons that could be cut out without losing anything, in terms of the overall plot and character arcs. But, overall, it is definitely worth watching; in fact, I'd recommend watching it twice.

Who poisoned Michael on Lost?
Kate reluctantly admit the truth that she was the person in the marshal's custody. As the raft is hurried toward completion, Jack walks up to Sun (Yunjin Kim) and confronts her about the poisoning. Sun admits that she is the one responsible, explaining that she wanted to keep Jin from leaving.

Does Claire's baby survive lost?
They return to the Dharma station, but find it abandoned. Before leaving, Claire tells Rousseau her daughter, Alex (Tania Raymonde), helped her and is still alive. Upon returning to the beach, Aaron is well and Claire has recovered all the lost memories from after her abduction by Ethan.

What happens to Claire's baby in Lost?
At Christian Shephard's memorial service, Carole Littleton, who has recovered from her coma, tells Jack she and Christian had a relationship which produced Claire, revealing her to be Jack's half-sister. Eventually, before departing to return to the island, Kate reveals to Carole that Aaron is Claire's son.

Is Jacob real on Lost?
Jacob (Lost) Jacob (Iacob in Latin) is a fictional character of the ABC television series Lost played by Mark Pellegrino. He was first mentioned as the true leader of the Others by Ben Linus and was described as a "great man" that was also "brilliant", "powerful" and "unforgiving".

Why was there a polar bear on Lost?
Polar bears were brought to the Island by the DHARMA Initiative, who kept them in cages at the Hydra station, on Hydra Island. (The World of the Others) According to Pierre Chang, because polar bears possess keen memory and adaptability instincts, they were prime candidates for studies in electromagnetic research.

What happened to Rose and Bernard on Lost?
After time-travelling to 1974, Rose and Bernard lived in peaceful seclusion in a cabin near the beach, refusing to get involved in any kind of conflict. They reemerged briefly to help Desmond before returning to their hut and were some of the last survivors remaining on the island when the series ended.

Why you should watch Lost?
Throughout the show, each person has encounters with others that are also stranded on the island. It shows that the world really is “small.” The show is also a great way to get away from everything. You really feel like you are a part of the show because you learn so much about the characters.

What happened in the end of the series
The final ever scene of Lost is intercut between events on the island and an alternate timeline known as the flashsideways – scenes that replace the flashbacks and flashforwards for the entire final season.
These flashsideways scenes come after Juliet (Elizabeth Mitchell), stuck in the 1970s, detonates a hydrogen bomb in the closing moments of season five in an attempt to prevent the hatch from ever being built. The logic is that, should the hatch never be created, Oceanic Flight 815 will never crash on the island. The flashsideways show what would have happened had the plane landed safely in Los Angeles. All season long, viewers see the characters rubbing shoulders with one another in LA, unaware of the events of the past five seasons.

Eventually, these characters are drawn together and they begin to recall their time on the island, which leads to the final scene’s revelation: they are dead in the flashsideways, which are essentially a netherworld the survivors created in order to congregate so they can move on to “whatever comes next” together.

So, to clear up the confusion: in the flashsideways scenes, these characters are dead. But no, they were not dead all along after their plane crashed.

The flashsideways scenes depict an afterlife that the characters constructed for themselves due to the fact that their time on the island – which was completely real from start to end – was the most important part of their respective lives.

The characters present in that final church scene are characters both dead and alive in island time, meaning several characters (including Kate, Sawyer and Claire) went on to live a full life beyond the series finale.

These flashsideways present a purgatory-of-sorts, where these characters come to when they eventually do die whenever that may be. When broken down, it’s a beautiful and reassuring depiction of the afterlife.

The plane crash, the smoke monster, the hatch, the island – it was all real.
Of course, it almost all ended rather differently...

Whoever dubbed it the “humble” potato forgot how versatile, not to mention delicious, the spud can be. And when you consider that potatoes can last in storage for months (months!), they’re basically a pantry hero. Still, if you bought a bag weeks ago and now you think they might be past their prime, it can be a little murky. Here’s how to tell if potatoes are bad, plus how to keep them fresh in the first place.

<span style="font-family: "tahoma"; font-size: large;">How to Tell if Potatoes Are Bad

It’s safe to say that if your potatoes growing any amount of mold, they’re no longer safe to eat. (And no, you can’t just cut the mold off, because the tiny invisible spores could already be growing elsewhere in the tuber.)
But what if they’re just a little soft, or have a few sprouts? As long as the potatoes are still mostly firm, they’re fine to cook. Potatoes are 80 percent water, so softness is usually just a sign of dehydration. But if they’re extremely mushy or shriveled, do not pass go.
Likewise, small sprouts can be removed with a vegetable peeler or knife. Long or large sprouts are a sign that the potato is probably past its prime and should be tossed. (You could technically plant the sprouts, if you wanted.)

<span style="font-family: "tahoma"; font-size: large;">Can you eat potatoes that are green?

Unlike green eggs and ham, green potatoes aren’t so nice. While the color itself is just a harmless increase in chlorophyll, it’s also a sign of something more sinister: According to the USDA, when a spud turns green, there’s usually an increase in a toxic compound called solanine, which can cause headaches, nausea and neurological problems in large amounts. But the USDA also says that you can safely “just peel the skins, shoots and any green color” because that is where the solanines concentrate. If a potato is entirely green, you should toss it; otherwise just trim and proceed. The green parts taste bitter, so if your tater tastes bitter, don’t eat it.

<span style="font-family: "tahoma"; font-size: large;">How to keep your potatoes fresher, longer:

When stored properly, your tubers can last for weeks or even months. Here, a few key pointers:

At the grocery store, look for unblemished potatoes with no cuts or bruises, smooth skin and shallow eyes (those little divots on the skin)

If the potatoes came in a plastic retail bag, transfer them to a basket so they can breathe

Don’t wash the potatoes until you’re ready to cook with them. Dirt protects the potatoes from premature spoiling, and storing moist potatoes could lead to mold

Store potatoes in cool but not cold temperatures; between 45°F and 55°F is ideal. Store them too cold (i.e., your fridge) and the starches will turn to sugar, affecting taste and texture. Temperatures higher than 55°F will accelerate dehydration

Potatoes will turn green from too much sunlight, so keep them somewhere dark and cool (like a cellar)

Don’t store potatoes and onions together. Onions emit a gas that will cause the potatoes to spoil faster
